What is FiftyOne?

By: (Google+)
From the FiftyOne website:

FiftyOne is the recognized market leader in international eCommerce and operates a technology and services platform that enables U.S. retailers with international ambition to transact with consumers in more than 90 countries worldwide.

What does this mean?

FiftyOne Global Ecommerce is an American company that provides shopping carts and a shipping service that allow US online merchants to sell to 106 different countries in 41 different currencies. Essentially, if a merchant uses FiftyOne, then FiftyOne handles your order from the shopping cart to your front door. And yes, they ship to Canada.

What does this mean to you?

This is good for Canadian shoppers. On websites using the FiftyOne service, you will see prices in Canadian dollars. More importantly, you will be able to see the exact price of shipping your order (including duties and brokerage fees) right to your door in Canada - and inexpensively.

What About BorderFree?

BorderFree was a competing shopping cart/delivery service provided by Canada Post. They were around for over ten years yet they were not very well known to Canadians. The Canada Post Corporation business unit was purchased by FiftyOne and was entirely absorbed into the FiftyOne brand as of March 1st, 2012. So, if they are big enough to buy part of Canada Post, they must be huge!

FiftyOne Global Ecommerce has partnered with over 120 top US online retailers to provide shipping services to Canada. Now that they have absorbed DNA from Canada Post, it will be very interesting to see what happens next. Our prediction is that they may be the first company to really break down the cross-border online shopping barrier between Canada and the US.
